2011 described as as an incredible vintage in Beaujolais

It looks like this will top every excellent year in the Beaujolais wine hall of fame.

Hot weather in April and May brought on very early blossoming and June and the first days of July were sunny. The end of July and beginning of August were cloudy with almost tropical amounts of rain. This was followed by a heat-wave with temperatures in the range of 35 to 43° C, perfect for the pre-harvest period.
The harvest started on 24 August, the earliest date since the heat-wave year of 2003 and finished under perfect weather conditions in the middle of September.
In each of the crus and particularly in the AOC Beaujolais and Beaujolais Villages, some winemakers have reported harvesting between 42 and 48 hectolitres per hectare, compared with a potential total yield of 52 hl per hectare.
The grapes were a lovely dark bluish-purple colour, perfectly ripe with a nice thick skin, sweet and dense.  Some really ripe grapes showed exceptionally high sugar levels. Beaujolais and Beaujolais Villages could have juices containing over 13° and some crus may even reach 14°. The juices show anthocyanin levels as high as in 2005 and 2009, which holds out the promise of some superb wines.

The young wines are a lovely dark purple with silky black tints and the crus are an almost impenetrable black an indication that these will be wines to keep and age.
The aromas are very delicate and complex, with pleasant red and dark berry scents and a hint of sweet spices.
2011 should produce some superbly full-bodied, exquisitely soft, well-rounded “primeur” wines bursting with wild fruits

Our Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau will be available from 17th November but as the amount we will have will be limited you need to pre order.  Click here to order now.
